There are many whales in the Straits of Gibraltar and whale watching is very popular as there is a 90 percent chance of seeing whales in each excursion. It´s also popular to go over to Tangier in Marocco as it takes only 40 minutes to sail over there.
No one should miss the folklore festival in August. The inhabitants of the town dress in Andalucian national costumes and hundreds of liveried horsemen ride beautiful steeds through town. The main festival in Tarifa is "Fiestas de la Virgen de la Luz" to honour the holy virgin of the light. It is in the beginning of September and is one week long. All the townspeople participate in it. "La virgen" is honored by food and drink. The people dress in national costumes and horsemen and their steeds are the main attractions in this great festival.
